ANNVILLE — If it weren’t for Baby, Scott Hoffer says, he would not be alive.
Hoffer was sleeping in his second-floor bedroom at 125 N. Railroad St. in Annville, when Baby, a Jack Russell terrier/Lhasa Apso mix, started barking about 2 a.m. Monday.
Hoffer awoke and discovered that his house was on fire. Hoffer made it out safely, but Baby did not.
“That dog is a hero,” he said. “I did not hear the smoke detector. If she wouldn’t have woken me up, I would not be here.”
The 34-year-old Hoffer said that when he was awakened, he heard a smoke detector beeping, and when he opened the bedroom door he smelled smoke.
